Your small business is growing, and you have more work than you can handle. It is time to hire new employees. Next, write down all of the skills that are needed to accomplish your company goals. Then subtract the skills that you and members of your team already have. What you have left is the skills that your new employee will need to have in order to help your business move forward. You should look for employees with skill sets that are different from skills you and your team already have. You do not need to duplicate what you already have; you need to fill in the gaps.

Once you have identified the qualities and skills you are looking for in an employee, it is time to prioritize them. There is no perfect employee, so chances are that you will end up hiring someone who is lacking in at least one of the areas you have listed. Keep in mind that it is much easier to train someone on technical skills than it is to change an employee’s attitude and values. Now that you have your list prioritized, use it to create your job description, listing the qualities and skills in order of importance. You may want to separate them into required and preferred. Be sure to also include the benefits of working for your company, such as opportunity for growth or a flexible schedule.

We have covered how to determine the qualities and skills needed for future employees.
