I Just Received a Notice From the IRS, but I Already Filed My Tax Return. What Should I Do Next?

Receiving a notice from the IRS can be upsetting, especially if you have received the notice in error. If you receive such a notice, however, there is no need to panic.

Understanding IRS Notices

Depending on your situation, you may receive several different notices from the IRS. Notices you may receive include:

  • CP59– You may receive this notice if the IRS believes you haven’t filed a required individual tax return.
  • CP63– You may receive this notice if the IRS believes you haven’t filed a required tax return and you owe tax.
  • CP259– You may receive this notice if the IRS believes you haven’t filed a required small business tax return.
  • CP515/CP516– Both of these notices are reminders that the IRS has not yet received a required tax return.
  • CP2566– You will get this notice if the IRS has calculated your tax, penalties and/or interest based on information received by third parties because your return was never received.

Responding to the Notice

The action you should take after receiving one of these notices from the IRS depends on the circumstances. Most notices include a response form that you can use to let the IRS know that you have already filed your return. If you have filed your return already and it has been more than eight weeks, use this form to let the IRS know. When completing the response form, be sure to check that the name, SSN or EIN and tax year listed match the return you sent. Include a signed and dated copy of the tax return you filed when you mail the form.

Keep in mind that if you just filed your tax return within the last eight weeks, the IRS may not have received and processed it prior to sending your notice.
